The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) serves as steward of federal and state laws and regulations, and FIU policies and guidelines- monitoring and implementing these as applicable throughout University operations.

The office oversees investigations for matters dealing with the University’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title VI, Title VII, and Title IX, University Regulations FIU-105: Sexual Harassment (Title IX) & Sexual Misconduct, FIU-106: Nondiscrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation (Title VII), and the University policy on Reasonable Accommodations for Faculty, Staff, Employment Candidates, and Visitors. OCR works collaboratively with all University internal and external constituents, particularly the Office of General Counsel and Office of the Provost.

Civil Rights: Non-Discrimination & Equal Opportunity

The Office of Civil Rights (OCR)  ensures the University’s compliance with federal and State of Florida civil rights and equal opportunity requirements applicable to public institutions of higher education. The Office advances a campus environment free from discrimination while educating and promoting fairness, dignity, accountability, and access for all students, faculty, staff, and applicants throughout the Panther lifecycle.

OCR: Proactive and Responsive

Through proactive training, education, and campus-wide awareness efforts, OCR works to prevent discrimination, reduce barriers to participation, and promote equal opportunity across employment, academic programs, and University services. When concerns arise, the Office also serves as the University’s responsive arm—receiving, reviewing, and addressing reports of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and accessibility-related concerns in accordance with law and policy.

Any student, employee, or applicant who has a sincere and reasonable belief that they have experienced discrimination or harassment based on age, color, disability, marital status, ethnic or national origin, race, religion, sex, retaliation, or any other protected category may report their concerns to the Office of Civil Rights through report.fiu.edu.

Mandatory Reporters

All FIU employees are mandatory reporters. If someone shares a serious concern with you, don’t attempt to address it on your own. Instead, report it to the Title IX Coordinator as soon as possible. When making a report, include any key details you know, such as who was involved, where the incident occurred, and whether there was any physical contact or harm.

Note: Even if you have reported the incident to your supervisor, as you are advised to do, you are still obligated to report the information to the Title IX Coordinator.

Religious Observances Calendar

FIU prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion and is committed to providing an educational, work, and living environment that is respectful and inclusive of religious observances, practices, and beliefs. As part of this commitment, FIU aims to provide reasonable religious accommodations where sincerely held religious observances or beliefs conflict with University policy or other requirements, unless such an accommodation would create an undue hardship.

The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) serves as a resource for FIU students and employees who are seeking a reasonable accommodation or modification due to their sincerely held religious observance, practice, or belief. Students and Employees should direct any religious accommodation requests directly to OCR at (305) 348-2785 or ocr@fiu.edu.
